Keeping up-to-speed with your moving assets

When it comes to moving assets like forklifts, AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), or delivery vehicles, Active RTLS (Real-Time Location Systems) is the go-to technology.

Using battery-powered tags that continuously transmit signals, you are always informed on exactly where your assets are right now. Seamlessly integrated with BOWE IQ software, Active RTLS turns real-time location data into actionable insights across your operations.

The variables at play

Compared to the battery-free tags used in Passive RTLS, the battery-powered tags necessary for Active RTLS do come at a higher cost. They also have a limited lifespan—ranging from months to years, depending on transmission intervals and power settings. So what makes this greater investment worthwhile?

  • Long-range visibility: Track assets over much longer distances, not just when they pass close to a reader.
  • Continuous tracking: Always know the exact location of critical assets, vehicles, or goods, even as they move between zones or outside fixed reader coverage.
  • Richer, high-quality data: Gain visibility to optimise operations, improve safety, and make confident, data-driven decisions.

Active RTLS
technologies compared

The range of Active RTLS depends largely on the wireless technology used, the most common options being:

  • Ultra-Wideband (UWB): With a range of 10–50 metres and an impressive accuracy of 10–30cm, UWB is the preferred technology for ultra-precise indoor positioning.

  • GPS: With a global range, GPS-based RTLS is best for outdoor tracking over long distances.

  • Real-Time Kinematic (RTK): While standard GPS typically provides location accuracy within a few metres, RTK can achieve centimetre-level accuracy by using signals from a fixed base station to correct positioning errors in real time. This makes RTK the ideal choice for applications where exact location data is critical, e.g. with autonomous vehicles and industrial automation.

With BOWE IQ software, location data can be captured in real-time on numerous machines and systems across multiple sites. The software then puts this data to work, providing top-tier analytics across all business units and ensuring the most efficient and safest workflows are followed.

Examples of Active RTLS in action

With intelligent BOWE IQ software at the core, Active RTLS becomes more than tracking—it becomes real-time optimisation. Here are some practical examples:

Forklifts

Track forklift locations in real time, optimise routes, and reduce congestion. Improve safety with restricted-zone alerts and gain utilisation insights to cut costs and right-size your fleet.

Autonomous Mobile
Robots (AMRs)

Enable precise navigation and task coordination with UWB accuracy. Prevent collisions, support dynamic rerouting, and provide performance metrics for smarter robot management.

Vehicle Fleets

Track and manage your trucks, trailers, and shuttles in real time—whether they’re on-site or in transit. Gain complete visibility across your fleet, helping you optimise routes, reduce idle time, and improve utilisation across every vehicle.

Yard Management

Know exactly what’s happening in your yard, from gate to dock. Monitor vehicle movements, streamline dock assignments, and cut down on bottlenecks and wait times.

Enhanced Safety

Enable restricted-area monitoring, staff duress alerts, and emergency mustering.

Asset Security

Prevent unauthorised asset movement with instant alerts.
